This week in Belle Plaine

It’s the second full week of June and there’s plenty to do in and around Belle Plaine this week.

Tonight (Monday), the Belle Plaine Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Tuesday, the Park Board meets at 5 p.m. at City Hall. Also on Tuesday, the senior shop open house will be held at the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Thursday night, the Belle Plaine Board of Education meets at 6:30 p.m. The board is expected to discuss the bids for the building project which were opened last week. The meeting was moved up a week to consider the bids. Also note the new meeting time. The board voted recently to change the meeting time permanently to 6:30 p.m.

Music on Main returns again to 12th Street in front of the Belle Plaine Area Museum on Friday at 6 p.m. This week, it will feature Czech band music.

A big event of the week occurs Saturday morning with the fourth annual Wallace Winkie Motorcycle Poker Run. The event kicks off with a pancake breakfast open to the public from 7:30-11 a.m. at Franklin Park. The motorcyclists will depart from the park at 10 a.m. and return to the Belle Plaine American Legion Hall by 5 p.m. There could be as many as 200 motorcyclists in the city that day of various makes, models and sizes and the preliminary weather reports indicate it could be a nice day for the ride.

The high school baseball and softball season is in full swing (no pun intended) and both varsity teams have a full schedule planned this week. The boys will host Sigourney tonight and Montezuma on Friday. The girls visit Sigourney Monday and are at Vinton-Shellsburg for a rare varsity doubleheader Tuesday. On Friday, they travel to Montezuma and on Saturday they will return to Vinton for the Vinton-Shellsburg Tourney, beginning at 11 a.m.
