Production lines – Black and Brown Friday

“It’s funny how I know the inside of my wife’s dog better than he does.” – Jeff Brown
Black and Brown Friday
The horrible scene keeps replaying itself in my mind. If I had a psychologist, I’m sure I’d be diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. All I can say about the incident is that it was the most horrible ordeal I’ve ever had to overcome in my life.
Ever since that day (I call it Black and Brown with a touch of Green Friday) I’m terribly preoccupied with the digestive cycle of my wife’s dog, Traveler. “Hey, dog,” I say at least one or two or ten times a day in a concerned, but reassuring tone, “when was the last time you did your business? In other words, how are you feeling today, Traveler, intestinally speaking?”
To say the dog had an accident would be a colossal understatement. This was no fender bender in the world of doggy misdemeanors; this was a major chain reaction pileup (literally). The first inkling I had that something might be wrong was when I got home and stepped through the kitchen door. Something didn’t smell quite right. Did I forget to take the garbage out last night? Did the sewer back up?
When I went into the living room, there was no doubt of the source of the offending smell molecules: the dog had apparently exploded. Don’t get me wrong, Traveler was fine. He was fast asleep near the front door waiting patiently for my wife to get home. But, somehow, I didn’t quite understand because it must have violated several laws of physics and quantum mechanics, the entire “inside” of the dog had somehow materialized “outside,” or, to be more specific, “on the surface of my living room carpet.”
It was everywhere. There were (not that I was counting) 23 globs of dog poop scattered haphazardly from the kitchen, through the living room, all the way to the office, not unlike some sort of canine minefield. Unfortunately for me (and the carpet I had just vacuumed the evening before) these were no ordinary dog turds that could easily be picked up or, as some dog aficionados (which I am definitely not) might say, “scooped.” They were more of a pudding like consistency comprised of the remnants of the previous night’s supper (kibble and bits and bits of pure evil).
How was I going to clean this up? For a few moments I just stared at the carnage slack-jawed, but that didn’t last long because I almost puked, so I stepped outside to clear my head. Okay, Jeff, you can figure this out, but you need a plan. Let’s see… I could wait for my wife to get home. It’s her dog. She should do it, but she won’t be home for hours.
“Jeff,” I said aloud, “you’re a man of action. You can’t just let a sleeping dog’s poop lie, especially all around the inside of your house!” With renewed resolve, I marched back inside and grabbed the cat’s litter box shovel, a container of Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, a can of carpet cleaner, and the trash bucket. All the while I worked out a 5-step cleaning procedure.
1. Take a deep breath and hold it.
2. Scrape the poop off the carpet with the shovel.
3. Scrape the shovel off in the trash bucket.
4. Wipe up the carpet as best as I could.
5. Rush outside for another breath of fresh air before I passed out.
I repeated this procedure no less than 23 times (not that I was counting) and then I steam-cleaned the entire carpet. Finally, I thought, Black and Brown with a touch of Green Friday was over. Too bad for me the cats, not wishing to be outdone by the dog, were already planning Upchuck Saturday.

Belle Plaine Library receives computer grant

The Belle Plaine Public Library has received a grant for $6,725 from the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP). The Community Development Initiative grant is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The grant is one of 17 grants announced this week by HACAP. It is the only grant awarded in Benton County and the largest single grant awarded in the most recent announcement. HACAP serves a six-county area in Eastern Iowa.
Kristi Sorensen, Belle Plaine Library director, said the funds will go toward the purchase of six laptop computers and one desktop unit. The library offers wireless internet access and with the new units, which should be available by March, there will be six laptops and seven desktop computers available for use at the library.
In her grant application, Sorensen pointed out that with the recent closure of Benco Manufacturing, more displaced workers may need internet access in seeking new employment. She said it is also possible that with the new units, classes could be offered at the library on basic computer skills or other similar subjects.

BP wrestlers send nine to districts

BP wrestlers send nine to districts

Nine members of the Belle Plaine wrestling squad punched their tickets to Saturday’s district meet at Eddyville-Blakesburg with strong showings last week at the sectional at BGM.
Belle Plaine claimed the team title with 212.5 points and will join BGM Tuesday night at the regional duals tourney at Pekin. The other two teams in that tournament to determine a berth in the state duals tourney are Louisa-Muscatine and New London/WMU.
At the sectional meet, the Plainsmen crowned four champs and had five runners-up. Jack O’Brien at 125 pounds, Cody Chekal at 130, Kurtis Osipchack at 140 and Reed Petersen at 215 pounds took titles. Second place finishes went to Zakk Buch at 103 pounds, Lance Hinschberger at 119 pounds, Austin Chekal at 152, Scott Wheeler at 189 and Jeremy Ellis at 285.
Eddyville-Blakesburg qualified 11 wrestlers for the district meet, including Dimitri Boyer, who claimed the 145 pound state title last year and has moved up to 152 pounds this season. BGM has six district qualifiers and Martensdale-St. Mary’s also has six advancing to Saturday’s district.
“We felt we really wrestled pretty well as a team Saturday,” Coach Bob Yilek said. “We lost some matches we could have won but we won some big matches when it counted.
“The bonus points were huge for us on Saturday. Of the 17 matches we won, 14 were by fall, one by technical fall and one major decision. That was just awesome and made the difference in the final score. The team race was close but we came away with some huge semi-final wins and pushed 10 wrestlers into the finals which really helped with the team points. When it was all settled we had 4 champions, 5 second place finishers, a third, one fourth and a fifth. It just goes to show that if you keep working hard good things will happen. As a team we are exited to be in the Regionals Duals again. Being one of the 16 teams to win Sectionals and 1 of the 32 in the duals is great for these kids.
“As for the nine that qualified to the Districts this week at Eddyville, it is one step closer to the State Wrestling Tournament which is what most wrestlers dream of. It is a matter of wrestling your best and giving 100 percent in the most important matches of the season. We are excited and I am sure the guys will pick it up and give it their best on Saturday!
“Jack O’Brien wins his 4th Sectional title with 2 falls
Cody Chekal – Champion – with a fall and major decision in the finals.
Kurtis Osipchack – Champion – with a fall and a tech. fall in the finals
Reed Petersen – Champion – had 3 falls

Northrop assesses Plainsman basketball week

Northrop assesses Plainsman basketball week

Belle Plaine Coach Justin Northrop gave his assessment of a week in which his Plainsman boys basketball squad won two of three contests.
By Coach Justin Northrop
On Monday the 1st we hosted North Mahaska and had a chance at a little revenge from earlier this year. We had a great offensive game and posted a 75-62 win over the Warhawks. This was one of the biggest offensive outputs of the year and was a bright point for the Plainsmen.
Giving up 62 points was not what we want and a part of the game we must improve on. Kyle Janss had his high game of his career with 22 points. Kyle is a streaky shooter and when he gets going everything seems to go in. He played very aggressive on the defensive end and in turn on the offensive end also. He shot 80 percent from the field and made all four free throw attempts. Ben Ehlen followed Kyle with 20 points and continues to show his offensive skills. He also connect on all six free throw attempts and had a season-high eight assists. Chris Janss rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points. Chris also led us in rebounding with 14 boards and continues to do a great job leading us in that statistic.
On Tuesday the 2nd we traveled down to Keota to face a state ranked and very tough Eagle team. They came out and showed us why they deserve this ranking and we could not match their intensity. I was more disappointed that we could not step up and contend with their physical play than the final score. They do everything very well and we did not do a whole lot to stop them and lost 84-51.
Keota scored on all but five trips up the floor in the first half. When we can only get five defensive rebounds in a half, that does not bode well for us. Ben Ehlen led us in scoring with 15, followed by Kyle Janss with 10. Seivon Steward had another solid game on the boards with seven to lead the team.
We did have some positive things happen for us though. As a coaching staff we made this a big learning experience and took the loss and change practice the next two days. Defense was obvious the component that we need to be very attentive to and the guys really took to it and got some things worked out. We must play great on the ball defense because of out size and that is what the focus was on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Friday we hosted Tri-County and the practice time really paid off, getting the victory 53-36. As far as a game that the fans really got into, this was probably not the game. We emphasized the defensive end more than ever this year. Trying to keep everything in front of us and quit taking so many chance on the steal was our focus. The guys did a great job keeping to the plan and the final score was an indication of that. The only area that I would like to be more aggressive was on the offensive end. We made free throws down the stretch and that was the difference in the game.
We did not shoot the ball at the rate that we would like and the offensive output suffered because of it. Ben Ehlen continued to lead us in scoring with 13, followed by Chris Janss and Keegan DeMeulenare with 10 each. Seivon Steward had a season high 10 rebounds to pace the team in that stat. Ben Ehlen continued to climb the SICL assist rankings dishing out five assists. As of this game he was one assist behind Brendan Kuesel of HLV in that category.
This coming week we have three home games. We host HLV on Monday and Iowa Valley on Tuesday. We then come back and Sigourney comes to town on Friday. This would be a great week to come to the gym and support these young guys. They put so much of themselves into the program and great fan support is always a big help. Go Plainsmen!
