Belle Plaine’s girls’ basketball postseason journey came to a quick end Saturday night, as the Plainsmen were upset by BGM, 40-35 in the first round of regionals at the Plainsman gym. The Plainsmen finish the season with a 14-8 record, while BGM advanced with a 10-12 mark.
It was a close game throughout, but the Plainsmen faded in the fourth quarter, when they scored just six points. Belle Plaine had a 13-8 first quarter lead, but BGM took a 21-20 lead into the half. The host team regained a 29-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Dani Coover led the Plainsmen with 11 points, 14 rebounds and two steals. Macy DeMeulenaere had 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block. In her final game, senior Taylor Schafbuch had seven points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals. Laura Breja, another senior, had four points, seven rebounds and two steals. Julie Long finished with three points, five rebounds and three steals.
Nobody scored in double figures for BGM. The Plainsmen had a substantial 33-18 lead in rebounding. But they also had a 24-19 lead in turnovers and BGM had a 5-1 lead in blocked shots and hit four more free throws.
