Residents planning on traveling south of the city Monday morning were greeted by orange warning signs and a flagger near Salt Creek and the Iowa River. The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) put up the signs and stationed a person along the road Sunday evening when flood waters crept over the road surface.
One IDOT employee in the area said the water was about four to six inches deep over the roadway Monday morning. Traffic has been limited to one lane. It is not clear when the flood waters might recede, but the area is under a flood warning.
Residents in Chelsea spent the weekend boating to their homes as flooding hit streets in that eastern Tama County community.
